The year 2010 is significant for Galilee. 5th June 2010 marks our church’s 50th Anniversary – our Golden Anniversary, our Jubilee. As such a celebration is rare, by God’s grace, let us celebrate it aright, honouring and glorifying God with the right spirit and intention and leave a record for the future generations to know what God has done for us the half-century just past.
Galilee began as a house-church in a bungalow beside the sea at No. 58 [later 175] Pasir Panjang Road [5 1/4 m.s.] south-western shore of Singapore. Galilee Church was inaugurated on 5 June 1960 with Rev Timothy Tow as Pastor. Sunday School began on 3 July 1960 with Dn [later Elder] Chia Hong Chek [of Life B-P Church] as Superintendent.
When our land-lease at Pasir Panjang expired on 30 April 1964, God spared us ten “quit” notices before we finally vacated on Chinese New Year’s Eve, 14 Feb 1972. On 20 Feb 1972, we began Worship Services [4.30pm] at the Life B-P Church, 9 Gilstead Road, at the kind invitation of her pastor, Rev (Dr) Timothy Tow.
By God’s grace, we were granted a land-lease of 30 years at Pandan Gardens by the Jurong Town Corporation [JTC] in 1976. Construction of our Church building began in 1978. After seven years, we finally entered our Promised Land at Pandan Gardens in June 1979, on the 19th Anniversary of Galilee.
